On 17/1/2005 noon, an open dialogue symposium was held at Dar Al-Baath about the National Progressive Front and its development horizons. Dar Al-Baath and the Baath party site on internet called for this symposium with the participation of Mr. Fayiz Ismaeil, secretary-general of Socialist Unionists` party, Mr. Yosif Faisal, secretary-general of Syrian Communist Party and Mr. Safwan Kodsi, secretary-general of Arab Socialist Union Party. Many Mass media and interested people attended the symposium.
Mr. Ilyas Morad, general director and editor-in-chief of Dar Al-Baath, opened the symposium by emphasizing its importance in talking about the Front and its development horizons at different organizational and political levels.
Mr. Ismaeil presented the Front foundation and the important role of the eternal leader Hafez Al-Assad in forming it at the beginning of 1971. He pointed out that the formation negotiations lasted a whole year and brought forth convergence in the convictions and stands of different progressive parties in making the convention. Mr. Ismaeil also referred to His Excellency president Bashar Al-Assad`s support to the Front.
Mr. Faisal talked about the organizational dimension of the front and the mechanism of other parties` affiliation to it. He clarified that the Front did not get its organizational dimension until the eternal leader Hafez Al-Assad had presented the idea of establishing it in the Rectification Movement Statement. Mr. Faisal also spoke about developing the Front work through publishing newspapers and establishing special headquarters. He emphasized that democracy is the slogan of the Front and its doors are open to all progressive forces and parties which comply with the convention and follow it.
Concerning the relation among the Front members, Mr. Faisal said that it is based on accord and understanding. It is not a merging relation as each party has its own opinion about any subject and this forms a collection of views which could be agreeing or at odds. On the other hand, the Front general thought as a whole is an outcome of a constructive internal debate to reach a general agreement and take one stand which serves the general welfare.
Mr. Kodsi referred to the lack of Front culture, a phenomenon which is common among many Front parties, stressing the necessity of giving this issue more attention.
