On 21.10.2007 Assistant Secretary General of al-Baath Arab Socialist Party Abdullah al-Ahmar discussed with Vassos Lyssarides, the Honorary President of the Cypriot socialist party and special envoy of the President of Cyprus relations between the two countries and recent regional developments and situation, particularly the situation in Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon and Cyprus.
Both sides affirmed the importance of establishing a just and comprehensive peace in the region according to international law, ending the Israeli occupation of Arab lands and the US occupation of Iraq, restoring the occupied Arab lands including the Syrian Golan, stopping the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and acknowledging the rights of the Palestinian people including their right to establish an independent state and the return of refugees to their home.
The two sides agreed that dialogue is the way to solve regional problems, not wars or threats or aggression. It was also agreed that the international community needs to take an active role in establishing peace and stability in the region, stressing the role of parties in mobilizing public opinion to face challenges and defend the rights of people and the independence of countries.
Al-Ahmar briefed Lyssarides on the stances of al-Baath party regarding developments, pointing out to Syria's efforts to encourage dialogue and cooperation to handle regional problems, calling for an active European role in establishing peace and stability in the region.
For his part, Lyssarides expressed his country's appreciation of Syria's stances, underlining Syria's principal role in the peace process and stability in the Middle East.
