Dr. Nizar Bani Almargeh

On 18 August 2015, after Palmyra City was invaded and its monuments ( Some of the most important monuments of human historical civilizations) were destroyed and vandalized The terrorist organization ISIS kidnapped and killed the archeologist and history researcher Khaled al-As'ad, beheaded him, maimed his body, crucified him on a column and cut his body into pieces.

What a horrible brutal crime, perpetrated on a great scientist like Khaled al-As'ad ? A crime against science and humanity knowledge, against history and civilization, against those who participated in the

archeological expeditions which could unmask and discover many treasures of the unique Palmyra civilization which is a world historical heritage.

The terrorist ISIS organization added a new crime to its record of the ugly crimes it committed against Syria and the entire mankind when it silenced a man that mastered the Aramaic language, in addition to several foreign languages. ISIS also committed a crime when it killed those who found and discovered the statue of “Palmyra Beauty”, cemeteries of Yorfa, Polma, Zabdata and Bolhain banoshori. ISIS also beheaded the leader of the expedition of excavation and rehabilitation and repair of Balshmin Temple (destroyed recently by the terrorists) and the rebuilding of about 400 columns in the Long Road, the famous 5 columns, rebuilding and repairing Queen Zenobia Baths, the northen walls of Palmyra, important parts of the walls and towers, halls and well known Fakhr Eddin Citadel.

The late Khaled al-As'ad deserved the Syrian Legion of Merit of the first degree, awarded to him by His Excellency Bashar al-Assad as per Decree No.229 for the year 2015, in appreciation oh his conduct and important achievements and in the science of archeology. Vice President Dr. Najah Alattar handed over the Legion of Merit to Khaled al-As'ad son Dr.Walid al-As'ad, the Director of Palmyra Museum, during an official celebration in al-Assad Library-Damascus on 18.09.2015.

In conclusion, it is necessary to say that such a horrible crime must ring the alarm bell because it is a crime against the whole humanity. Sincere international efforts must be made to eliminate this dangerous epidemic terrorism.
